Trending Now: Beef Tallow Skincare

We know what you’re thinking – WHY is everyone suddenly putting animal fat on their face and body?! In a bid to help answer this question, we take a deep dive into the ‘it’ ingredient in skincare at the moment.

First thing’s first. What is beef tallow?

Put simply, beef tallow is rendered animal fat. It’s rich in triglycerides and at room temp, is a white-ish solid substance. Typically used for cooking at high temperatures for deep frying, beef tallow has also made its way into soaps, candles and skincare.

Although trending again now (we're looking at you, Tiktok!), beef tallow has long been used for centuries, where ancient civilisations first discovered its nourishing properties.

When used for skincare, beef tallow undergoes a process which often involves being mixed with scented oils to minimise its natural smell. The result is a subtle 'nutty' aroma that differs between brands.

The benefits of beef tallow

Thanks to its rich nutrient profile including essential fatty acids, the composition of beef tallow closely resembles that of our skin. Also rich in vitamins A, D, E and K, beef tallow is known to deeply nourish and moisturise - making it a great topical solution and targeting many different skin concerns.

In addition to helping to repair and protect the skin barrier and reduce inflammation, beef tallow provides superior hydration and absorption, which of course translates to soft, supple and glowy skin!

Is beef tallow suitable for all skin types?

For the most part, it is understood that many different skin types can benefit from a lathering of beef tallow skincare, especially those with dry skin, however, for individuals with oily or acne-prone skin, it may lead to clogged pores causing unwanted breakouts. In some, it also may exacerbate conditions like rosacea.

Dermal clinician @drivenbybeauty took to her channel to debunk some myths surrounding the natural skincare trend, stating that unless you have super dry skin, beef tallow might not be your friend.
